Two of my go-to beauty derms, Dr. Debra Jaliman from NYC and Dr. Jessica Wu from L.A., gave me the skincare scoop as to why you should go on a little pre-emptive strike from your winter cream for the spring and summer months.
A shocking reason why?: It can lead to irritation and break-outs on your face, back and even butt! You heard right. When you think about it, their revelation makes perfect sense because:
#1: Hot and humid climates obviously make you sweat. The swelling of skin cells make oil get stuck in the pores and a thick skin cream can clog them up even further. (Ick!) Plus, more bacteria grows in the summer under the heat so everything you touch makes it easier for your skin to break out. (Ick x 2!)
#2: Since people like to exercise (yeah, or heave themselves to them gym is more like it!) and be more active during the warmer weather months (ie. sitting on their bike, spinning class, etc.), your butt can break-out into icky bumps from heat alone. The mix of a oil + sweat + a heavy winter cream = not a pretty combo.
So how the heck to avoid this summer skin sitch? Our experts suggest going for a lighter lotion, and to try to steer clear of any that contain wheat germ oil (go with oil-free especially if you’re acne-prone) and petrolatum, the jelly-like ingredient found in stuff like Vaseline.
