mecam personal video recorder review

by Reviewboard MagazineJune 7, 2013

mecam personal video recorder reviewThe mecam personal video recorder is a pretty nifty idea for our 2013 Father’s Day Gift List.  It looks a  lot like those round pins people wear on their jean jackets that say things like “Wine improves with age, I improve with wine”.  The only difference really is that this pin has an infrared light array and a 720p high definition video camera on it.  It’s a bit undercover too, so because it isn’t a household name not a lot of people will recognize it for what it is.  This can be fun, and dangerous all at the same time.  For instance, here in Illinois you have to have everyone’s permission that you film (with audio) or you are committing a felony.  So check your local laws and regulations regarding public video recording.

Could you use this bad baby to go into the movie theater and record a movie for later… probably not it only has an 80 minute battery life, although it will record up to 4 hours of video if you have the optional 16GB micro SD.  If you did try you would likely be locked up for that too.  I’m sorry but this thing could probably get you in to some trouble if you weren’t careful.  That said, it’s really neat. The whole concept that we can start recording our lives is interesting.  Storage space is now cheap enough that we could in fact record the rest of our lives on video.  Why would anyone want to do that?  Well for one thing… memories.  Not only is it an excellent way to relive important moments, but it is an invaluable archive that can be handed down to future generations.  Learn my lessons, experience them first hand in a POV video, and you won’t have to relive the same mistakes I have.  Or… this is the moment I learned that a very moist bread dough will yield a nice crusty bread…

I like the concept quite a bit, but I’m not sure this device is the answer to that.  What I am sure of is this is an excellent way to record a fishing trip with your son, or a hunting trip, or any event that involves family or friends.  Will you get every shot you need to?  Probably not, but if you pin it in the middle of your chest you will get most of them, and you will be surprised what you learn from re-watching the events from a slightly shorter perspective…

No the mecam is definitely something that is interesting and fun to use. For $50 US they are very worth it.  I’ll give the mecam 4 out of 5 stars.
