New Apple Mac Pro Review

new-mac-pro12 Cores in the processor.  I feel like ending it there. It is a lot like saying look at this corvette; 1 million hp.  40 GB/s PCIe bandwidth.  It’s got the new generation Intel Xeon E5 Chipset.  256 bit floating point instructions… A four channel DDR3 memory controller clocked @ 1.866 GHz.  60GB/s memory bandwidth. Dual AMD FirePro GPU’s with 6GB of VRAM (each).  You can edit 4K video at full resolution while rendering effects in the background and still have enough power to connect this beast to three 4k monitors while simultaneously ordering takeout. OMG.

PCIe flash storage – this is next gen stuff here, these are not SATA based solid-state drives.  This beast boots in 6 seconds flat. 1.2 GIGABYTES per second xfer speeds.

Cooling was a big deal on a system like this.  It gives off the heat of a small nuclear sub, so how do they keep it cool?  That’s where the design comes in, they were able to do this with what they call a unified thermal core.  Rather than using multiple heat sinks and fans to cool the processor and graphics card they built everything around this big honkin piece of extruded aluminum that was actually designed from the ground up to maximize airflow as well as thermal capacity.  Nothing has ever been done like this.  It’s innovative. It’s bold.  It’s round and cylinder shaped.

Loads of expansion slots, usb, firewire, thunderbolt 2, it’s like lions and tigers and bears oh my!

Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac (the new fast as heck wireless standard that no one really has yet because it’s kind of expensive).

Our benchmarks on this system were so amazing… we don’t have any because the machine was so fast they sent it here, and then it winked back to them so fast we didn’t get to actually breathe on it. No seriously though, they aren’t out yet, they will be later this year.  These are the specs.  This is the new Apple.  It is a departure from the previous recipe of putting 2nd place hardware in a really nice machine, providing the best software solutions that work 99.9% of the time and giving unbelievable support.  This is all of that, but instead using the best hardware money can buy.  The mark up they got on the hardware made Apple’s world go round’ and round’.  They won’t be able to mark up this hardware like they did their other stuff because there isn’t enough wiggle room, only the ultra rich would be able to afford it.  So it will be interesting to see where the price points come out for their top tier stuff.

I think Tim Cook and his team might have done something here.  If the stuff works as advertised, and is fast… if the new iPhone 5s is anything like this… beast of a Mac Pro… we will see Apple at the top of the game for years to come.  Innovative, Bold, Risky…  I like it.
