Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 – Review

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]o as a nerd I was really pretty excited to check out the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9.  There were a number of reasons, I love the idea of a reader and the 10+” tablet I have now is just too big to be a real reader.  I know an inch and change doesn’t make a big difference on paper, but in practice I assure you that it does.  It’s that much heavier, harder to find a good long term position with, and yes I could get a holder but you lose that “book” feel when you go through all that.  I just want to get lost in fiction and not be jarred out of my vivid imagination with the logistics of a bulky reader.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 – More than a reader

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9Obviously the Kindle HD 8.9 is MORE than a ‘reader’.  It’s a full fledged tablet capable of streaming video content, reading books, and surfing the web to name a few. It does not have the latest and greatest processor, or the most RAM, or even the most storage space.  What is does have is plenty of processing power, plenty of RAM and plenty of storage space (even on the 16 GB model).  It does that for a LOT less than other tablets.  The screen is nice, bright, has vivid color, and is very responsive to your touch.  I like it. I like it alot.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 – Nerds like us

Getting back to the nerd reference I made, as a nerd one of the things I had on the list of things to do was to root the Kindle, and put the latest version of Android on it.  So I did that.  When I was finished I realized I had “Yet another tablet” and for the first time while using the Kindle HD 8.9 I got bored.  It just wasn’t exciting anymore, it was just a tablet.  So I put the Kindle OS back on the tablet and set it up again.  Oddly a few minutes later I was having fun again.  You just don’t get the same experience without all the Kindle OS features.  I quickly realized that there is a tool for every task, and that making a screwdriver into a hammer isn’t always the best route.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 – Unlimited Content

What I really like about the Amazon Kindle HD 8.9 is the unlimited content.  It’s a one stop shop for video, audio books, and ebooks (among other things like Music, TV Shows, the list goes on).  If I’m on the road I can fire up the audio book version of a book I’m reading and listen to it through my car radio. I used the headphone jack to accomplish this, but the Amazon Kindle HD 8.9 does have Bluetooth so theoretically you could stream the audio through your car audio system or even a Bluetooth docking station at home.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 – Easy Setup

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9The Amazon Kindle HD 8.9 is easy to setup too, there is nothing to it really –  if you have an account already you can literally just sign in with that and everything you bought (digital content) is instantly available to you.  Shopping from the Kindle HD is going to be a real treat this year, most of my family are getting things from Amazon since I can sit there in the recliner and click/ship what I want instead of carting off to 50 stores to get trampled by the black Friday mobsters.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 – Conclusion

The Amazon Kindle HD 8.9 is a real score.  A useful tool that has a great battery life; The Amazon Kindle HD is the Swiss Army Knife of Tablets/Readers.  For the price, it just can’t be beat by anything out there, and I’d rather have a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 than an Apple iPad Mini so it gets 5 out of 5 stars.
