Ender’s Game Movie Review
The plot was focused primarily on the training aspects of Ender’s adventure and really makes you think about the qualities of a perfect war leader. In 2086 an alien species called the Formics attack Earth. Ben Kingsley’s character “Mazer Rackham” halts their advance by blowing up the control ship and disabling the enemy’s entire fleet. Harrison Ford’s character Colonel Graff is then set on a mission to find the perfect leader for a new invasion fleet that is going to be sent to the Formics home world to defeat their army once and for all.
There are a lot of really fine performances in the movie, particularly Bonzo Madrid played by Moises Arias. He killed the role of a bully squad commander. The first 30 seconds he appeared on screen you hated him and he made you absolutely hate him during his entire time on screen. Haielee Steinfeld played Petra Arkanian Ender’s love interest and best friend. She takes him under her wing and helps him learn some key skills during the initial part of his phase 2 training.
There are some folks that think the characters are rather 2 dimensional. I know a guy that didn’t like the movie because Ender didn’t experience any growth during his training. I disagree, the growth wasn’t about his strategy and skill he was brilliant, the world’s best… that was the point. His growth involved life experience, and his personal ability to contain the struggle to balance his emotions (like his potential for violence, which is the reason he feared he was becoming his brother). There could have been a little more character development on some of the other cast members, but there wasn’t a lot of time left for that kind of thing as the movie was 114 minutes as is. Perhaps they could have had 6 minutes of character growth for cast members but I’m not sure that would have accomplished anything.
All in all this is an excellent film, I don’t want to get into what happens too much and spoil the film but it is absolutely the best science fiction movie I’ve seen this year. You should run out and see it.
