Oral-B 5000 SmartSeries Toothbrush with Bluetooth Review
Oral-B had a 5000 series out awhile ago that came with a small electronic screen that did essentially the same thing the app does in this version. Basically it is a way for Oral-B to update the app that guides you through your brushing experience instead of selling you a new toothbrush every year. It’s pretty neat and only about $100 so not a bad investment and a great gift idea.
We were thinking about doing a little video to show you what it was like but after a quick scan of the old YouTube we found that Oral-B already made one that lets you see how it works so we linked that one.
Oral-B 5000 SmartSeries Toothbrush with Bluetooth is a rechargeable 5 piece toothbrush kit. It comes with:
- The Oral-B SmartSeries Handle
- The CrossAction Brush Head
- A Premium Charger with Refill Head Storage
- A Premium Travel Case
The premise behind the whole Oral-B 5000 SmartSeries is the bluetooth feature and the associated phone/device app. The app is pretty cool, it works well and has a great ‘eye candy’ design. The Oral-B app tells you how long to brush each quadrant of your teeth. It lets you know if you are using too much pressure (which can damage the enamel on your teeth) and allows you to setup custom brushing times for problem areas.
The app gives you little pearls of wisdom while you are brushing which is fine, but would be much better to see a timeline feed from your facebook or twitter or the ability to customize that part of it. That said it is only 2 minutes of your life, there is no reason you can’t just look at the screen for 30 seconds a quadrant and move on without messing with your social media.
The Oral-B 5000 SmartSeries Toothbrush with Bluetooth will also track your bushing habits over time. It graphs and charts up to 6 months of brushing data so you can see your progress. Although it does not have a fitbit addon so you can announce that you brushed your teeth 3 times a day for the last 6 months without error 😉
It is a fabulous idea and I really like it a lot. There are several brush heads that you can pick up separately from the package. I didn’t test any of them but you can choose between 9 different heads that I know of (Cross Action, Floss Action, Precision Clean, Deep Sweep, Dual Clean, ProWhite, Ortho, PowerTip, and Sensitive).
Oral-B 5000 SmartSeries Toothbrush with Bluetooth Review – The BS
There is a lot “Premium” stuff in this package. I’m not sure when plastic became a “Premium” anything but the marketing folks who decided to upsell the accessory pack where definitely reaching for emphasis on the value-adds. I’m not saying the accessories are ‘cheap’ (although they are plastic, so clearly they didn’t cost a lot of money). What I am saying is Premium adds a certain expectation that is not met well in this case. Truth in advertising is just as important to us as breathing so we have to ding them for that one. A premium travel case to us would not be plastic. If it were plastic it would do something other than open and close. That was not the case! (See what I did there?)
The charger is a fine charger, but it isn’t “Premium”. It’s a plain white plastic charger with some space to store your heads. It’s great. But my idea of “Premium” would be trimmed with something to make it look more attractive, some colored or metallic trim (so you could match it to your bathroom colors), a little more heft to it, and maybe even a UV light in the toothbrush head tray to kill bacteria. Of course that would cost more money, but I would expect to pay that for a PREMIUM charger w/refill head storage and UV death ray.
Oral-B 5000 SmartSeries Toothbrush with Bluetooth Review – Conclusion
All in all I would say that the Oral-B 5000 SmartSeries Toothbrush with Bluetooth is a solid performer. If it wasn’t for the use of the word Premium I would have given it a 5 star ranking. That said I gave it a 4 star ranking and yes… I think it would make an excellent gift for someone you care about. The Oral-B 5000 SmartSeries Toothbrush with Bluetooth is a great addition to any daily regiment.
