Tovala Smart Oven – Scan your food it will automatically cook it!

The Tovala Smart Oven is a really neat idea.  It launched on Kickstarter yesterday with a goal of $100,000.  Today it is currently sitting (at 8:43am) at $180,121 in pledged funds.  Now that the uncertainty of the project getting the necessary funding is over (LOL) it is clear that this will be one of those projects that gets 500%+ funded. It’s a great idea. It’s not a new idea, but it is probably the least expensive iteration and it is paired with a meal service (which is completely optional) that has chef created food delivered to your door with the aid of a mobile app.

The idea is you scan the code from your meal pack and the oven does the rest.

So what makes the Tovala Smart Oven so different? As Kangol from the old UTFO Roxanne, Roxanne song said “I can sing, rap, and dance in just one show”.  The Tovala Smart Oven can Bake, Broil, Convection and Steam all in one meal.  Have you ever microwaved left over fried rice?  It never really comes out right unless you wet a paper towel and throw it in with the rice to cook.  The steam from the paper towel makes a real difference.  It’s never quite the same regardless because in order to finish it the right way you would need to also throw it in a Wok or broiler to add that extreme heat to it for a 30 – 60 more seconds.  With the Tovala Smart Oven you can do that all in one unit and it cooks almost as fast as a microwave without making your food change at a molecular level.

You can put your food in the oven, and then with an app on your mobile device tell it to Steam for 5 minutes at 500 degrees, then bank for 12 minutes at 375 degrees, and finally for the last 3 minutes to throw a little crisp on broil at 425 for 3 minutes.  There are no limits to what you can do or program in the Tovala Smart Oven.

The Tovala Smart Oven biggest competition is the June Intelligent Oven which is a Wi-Fi connected appliance that promises to do a lot of the same thing, by using an HD camera to automatically recognize the food you put in the oven.  The $1500 price tag might put it out of the reach of the average consumer unless it can really prove that it can handle business in the kitchen.

The Tovala Smart Oven seems to have a price range of $199-$329
