GoMiata Act Stage One Clutch Review - Mazda Miata Restoration
Replacing the clutch in our 1991 Miata with the stage one Act clutch from GoMiata.
Miata Restoration - Replacing clutch with Act Stage One from Gomiata
Well the next item we worked on was replacing our clutch. As you noted we replace our flywheel with a lightweight model. The best way to purchase your ned clutch is to get a complete kit not just the clutch. We contacted Kevin McGowen over at Gomiata.com. He set us up with the Act Stage One clutch kit.
This kit included everything we needed.
1) Clutch
2) Throwout bearing
3) Pilot bearing
4) Pressure plate
5) Clutch alignment tool
6) Clutch
Now we already had the transmission removed when we replaced when we replaced the flywheel, see the Racing Beat Aluminum Flywheel article for how we did the removal. Installing the clutch was very straight forward. Make sure you recived the correct model for your year of automobile. The clutch alignment tool is VERY important. We replace the throwout bearing in the front of our transmission. We then moved to the rear of the engine. Place the clutch and pressure plate on to the rear of the engine. Use the alignment tools to insure correct alignment of the center of the clutch, pressure plate with the rear of the engine. If this is wrong replacing the transmission is almost impossible, in fact it won't install.
The photo in the image gallery shows our clutch and pressure plate with the alignment tool installed. Bolt the pressure plate onto the flywheel and we were done. As stated on the GoMiata site: The Advanced Clutch Technology Stage 1 Clutch provides a 45% increase in clamping force over stock and can handle up to 200 ft/lbs of torque! ACT clutches provide long life and fast, clean shifting. If you want the finest clutch for your Miata, ACT is the way to go.
