From the onset, you might not see a difference between Onkyo’s two newest receivers, aside from the THX logo present on the higher end HT-RC270.  Judging a book by its cover is a valid strategy in this case.  There are a few significant differences here, but these receivers have a lot in common.

For starters, they’re both equipped with HDMI 1.4 inputs, including a quick setup HDMI input on the front of the unit.  They decode the latest in lossless audio formats, like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and include Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz.  Both units feature Faroudja DCDI Cinema for all your upscaling needs.

They’re equipped with seven of Onkyo’s WRAT amplifiers and new three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry.  You’ll also find 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs. The $499 HT-RC260 has all that, but doesn’t come equipped with Audyssey MultEQ or a THX certification like the $849 HT-RC270.
