Our complete buying opinion

Written for the current Reviewboard score of 34.0/100 · poor · 1242 words

When evaluating the 2022 Ford F-150, it is essential for potential buyers to understand that this vehicle carries significant mechanical and safety concerns, which directly inform its overall standing. Based on comprehensive analysis of owner feedback, reported issues, and extensive recall history, the Reviewboard assigns a score of 34.0 out of 100, resulting in an opinion of "poor." This rating is not based on official U.S. government crash-test ratings, but rather on a holistic assessment of real-world ownership experience and documented problems reported by owners. The buying recommendation is consistent with this low score because the volume and nature of owner complaints, coupled with numerous safety recalls, indicate substantial unresolved issues that affect reliability and potential risk for the owner.

The 2022 Ford F-150 is marketed as a capable workhorse, designed for utility and hauling. It is positioned as a modern, feature-rich truck appealing to buyers seeking a blend of capability and contemporary design. While it possesses inherent strength in its intended use—being a robust vehicle for demanding tasks—the ownership experience is frequently marred by mechanical and electrical issues that detract from the overall value proposition.

The core concerns reflected in the low rating stem directly from owner feedback. Across various public sources, buyer sentiment has been overwhelmingly negative. The data shows that owners have reported a total of 571 consumer complaints, including 19 crash reports, 6 fire reports, and 24 injury reports. These issues are not isolated; they cluster around critical systems, specifically the POWER TRAIN, the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, and various other components. This pattern suggests systemic concerns regarding the vehicle's long-term reliability and functional integrity.

The most frequently cited areas of concern involve the powertrain behavior, electrical glitches, and quality issues that often emerge early in ownership. Specific problems reported by owners include issues with the 10-speed automatic transmission, such as harsh shifts and delayed engagement, along with general electrical inconsistencies. These mechanical and electrical faults are compounded by a history of recalls affecting various components across the model years, including the driveshaft, lighting control modules, and safety systems like airbags.

Safety and recall context is a critical factor for any potential buyer. The 2022 F-150 has been subject to numerous recalls that address potential risks to occupants and the public. These recalls cover components ranging from the POWER TRAIN—specifically issues related to the driveshaft which can impact drive power or vehicle control—to the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, which includes concerns about trailer brake functionality and visibility lighting. Furthermore, there are specific safety recalls concerning the steering column wiring harness and the instrument panel covers related to airbag deployment, indicating potential risks to occupant protection.

For example, recalls have addressed issues such as the driveshaft assembly, where loose underbody insulators may contact the driveshaft, and concerns regarding the electrical system, including the integrated trailer brake control module software. Additionally, there are recalls concerning exterior lighting, where parking lights have been reported to flicker when headlights are activated, which affects visibility and compliance with safety standards. These recalls highlight that while the vehicle is designed for utility, certain systems require attention and repair by dealers to ensure full safety compliance.

The price context places the 2022 Ford F-150 at a market average price of $36,500.00. When considering this cost alongside the documented issues and the necessary maintenance associated with addressing open recalls, buyers must weigh the initial appeal against the potential long-term costs and risks.

Who should consider this vehicle? This truck may be suitable for buyers who prioritize raw utility and capability over flawless mechanical performance and a completely trouble-free ownership experience. It is best suited for those who are prepared to thoroughly investigate service records, address outstanding recalls immediately upon purchase, and accept the inherent risks associated with a vehicle that has documented owner complaints regarding its core systems.

What should a buyer verify? Prospective owners must look beyond marketing materials and demand transparency regarding the vehicle's history. Buyers should verify the status of all open recalls, particularly those related to the powertrain, electrical system, and safety components. They should also seek out detailed owner feedback beyond general reviews to understand the specific mechanical quirks reported by others.

In summary, while the 2022 Ford F-150 offers the capability expected of a full-sized truck, the documented history of complaints—with over 571 reports focusing on powertrain and electrical systems—and the extensive recall history related to safety components necessitate caution. The Reviewboard’s assessment of 34.0 out of 100, labeled "poor," reflects the reality that these systemic concerns are significant. Buyers must proceed with full awareness that they are acquiring a vehicle with known mechanical complexities and outstanding safety mandates that require diligent attention before purchase.

When faced with a vehicle that carries such a significant history of reported problems and safety recalls, the practical steps for a potential buyer must shift from simple interest in the truck to rigorous due diligence. The negative owner sentiment, reflected in the high volume of complaints regarding powertrain behavior and electrical glitches, signals that these are not minor annoyances but potentially systemic flaws that affect daily operation and long-term reliability. A buyer should understand that the vehicle is not simply "used"; it is a product with documented mechanical complexities that require proactive management. This means treating the purchase as an investment in a machine that requires immediate attention to its history before any other considerations.

Practical buying guidance centers on mitigating these known risks. First, prospective owners must insist on a complete and transparent review of all outstanding recalls. The list provided details numerous campaigns affecting components like the driveshaft, lighting control modules, and safety systems. Before committing to a purchase, buyers should verify that the seller has documented proof that all necessary repairs have been completed according to Ford’s specifications. If any critical safety or powertrain-related recalls remain open, this represents an immediate liability and potential risk for the new owner. Second, because the complaints heavily focus on the electrical system and powertrain, buyers should allocate a significant portion of their pre-purchase inspection budget toward specialized mechanical and electrical diagnostics beyond a standard visual check. This ensures that any existing issues are identified before they become costly problems down the line.

Furthermore, understanding the context of the reported failures is crucial for managing expectations. The documented concerns about transmission shifting quality and electrical system functionality suggest that maintenance and repair costs may be higher than anticipated, as addressing these issues often involves complex component work. Buyers should factor in potential future expenses related to servicing components that have been subject to recalls or owner complaints. This financial consideration helps contextualize the market price of $36,500.00 against the actual cost of ownership and necessary repairs associated with a vehicle carrying this level of documented history. Only by acknowledging these known complexities can a buyer make an informed decision that aligns their expectations with the reality of owning a vehicle with this specific track record.

Ultimately, the evidence points toward a vehicle where capability is balanced by inherent mechanical uncertainty. While the 2022 Ford F-150 remains a powerful truck, the cumulative weight of owner complaints and safety recalls dictates a cautious approach. The decision to purchase should only be made after thoroughly addressing every outstanding issue and ensuring that all necessary repairs are completed to meet safety standards. Based on the comprehensive analysis of reported issues and historical data, the final recommendation is that the 2022 Ford F-150 is rated 34.0 out of 100 with an opinion of poor.
